“VERTICAL” is an artistic project around the industrial architecture of Asturias (Spain). It consists of a graphic art folder that collects a series of original prints of the approximately 50 coal mine shafts that remain standing today in the region. It is also a documentary work that shows a complete catalog of these structures, probably the most representative monuments of more than 200 years of coal mining in Asturias. The project aims to contribute to the dissemination, knowledge, and enhancement of the industrial heritage, in a historical moment of transition (2019) that marks the end of coal mining in Asturias and the rest of Spain. The works that compose vertical are created through a special combination of ancient printing techniques and fabrication technologies, as a result of a technical investigation in graphic art in order to channel the aesthetic potential of the industrial heritage. It is an interdisciplinary project that integrates artistic activity and documentary work, technology, and traditional processes, industrial heritage and visual experimentation. Technically the works that compose Vertical are created by a combination of woodcut techniques with numerical control manufacturing technologies. The author has investigated in this procedure he calls post-digital printmaking. The technique generates new graphic effects and ways of working and formally adapts to industrial structures. As conceptual precedents of the project, it is necessary to mention the photographic and archival work of the German artist couple Hilla and Bernd Becher, the origin of the genre of photography of industry. Also the first example of an artist’s book, “Twentysix Gasoline Stations” by Ed Ruscha, self-published by the artist in 1963.

“Vertical” is carried out with the support of “Laboral-Impulsa” residency [Laboral Center for Art and Industrial Creation 2018-2019] and the Culture Foundation of the municipality of Gijón, in colaboration with several institutions related with industrial heritage.
